Oil Tankers Birchleaf, Appleleaf (ex Texol), Plumleaf (ex Trinol), Erivan, &c., are understood to have been disposed of, or returned to owners. It is possible that some of the " 0l " Tankers detailed hereafter may have taken up commercial service.


PETROBUS, PETRELLA, PETRONEL (Dunlop, Bremner, 1918).

  • Description: 1 funnel with 1 mast just before, both raking and aft of amidships. 1024 tons.
  • Dimensions: 164 x 28 x 11.5, feet.
  • I.H.P. 500 = 9 - 10 kts. Own oil: 50 tons Cylindrical boilers.
  • Complement, 16.

DREDGOL (Simons, 1918). About 7000 tons.

  • Dimensions 326 x 54.5 x 18.75, feet.
  • I.H.P. 2400 = 11 kts. Own oil 360 tons. Cylindrical boilers.

FRANCOL (Earle S.B. Co.), MONTENOL (W. Gray), SERBOL (Caledon S.B. Co.).

  • Description: 1 funnel with 1 mast before, close together, as in Standard Cargo Ships.
  • All details as Belgol below, but of different appearance.
  • All launched 1917.

BELGOL (Irvine D.D. Co.) ; CELEROL (Short Bros.) ; FORTOL McMillan ; PRESTOL (Napier & Miller) ; RAPIDOL (W. Gray) ; SLAVOL, VITOL (Greenock and Grangemouth Co.).

  • All launched 1917. 4900 tons.
  • Dimensions : 335 X 41.5 x 20.5 feet.
  • I.H.P. 3375 = 14 kts., Own oil: 300 tons., Cylindrical boilers.
  • Complement, 39.
  • Description: 2 masts fore and aft : 1 funnel between. Rapidol a little different to other ships

BIRCHOL, BOXOL (Barclay, Curle) ; EBONOL (Clyde S.B. Co.) ; ELDEROL, ELMOL (Swan Hunter) ; LARCHOL, LIMOL, (Lobnitz).

  • All launched 1917.
  • As Sprucol, Teakol, below, but these have triple expansion engines and cylindrical boilers. I.H.P. 700 = 12 kts.
  • Description: 1 mast forward, 1 funnel aft.

SPRUCOL, TEAKOL (Short Bros.) ; OAKOL, PALMOL (W. Gray & Co.).

  • All launched 1917. 1925 tons.
  • Dimensions: 220 X 34 X 12 feet.
  • Bolinders oil engines. B.H.P. 640 = 8 - 10 kts. Own oil : 40 tons.
  • Complement, 19.
  • Description: 1 mast forward, 1 funnel aft.

CREOSOL (Short Bros.) ; DISTOL, PHILOL, SCOTOL (Tyne Iron S.B. Co.) ; KIMMEROL, VISCOL (Craig, Taylor).

  • All launched 1916. 1920 tons.
  • Dimensions: 220 x 34.66 x 12.5 feet.
  • I.H.P. 700 = 9 kts. Own oil: 40 tons. Cylindrical boilers.
  • Complement: 19.
  • Description: 1 mast forward. Funnel aft.

MIXOL (Greenock & Grangemouth Co., 1916) ; THERMOL (Caledonian S.B. Co., 1916.) 4145 tons.

  • Dimensions: 270 x 38.5 x 20.25 feet.
  • I.H.P. 1200 = 11 kts. Oil: 150 tons.
  • Description: 2 masts, 1 funnel at stern.

TREFOIL (Pembroke, 1913). 4060 tons.

  • Dimensions: 280 x 39 x 18.25 feet.
  • 2 sets 6-cylinder 2-cycle Diesel engines. H.P. 1500 = 12 kts.
  • Deadweight capacity : 2000 tons.
  • Own oil: 200 tons.

FEROL (Devonport 1914) ; SERVITOR (Chatham, 1914). 2007 tons.

  • Dimensions: 200 x 34 x 13 feet.
  • 2 sets 4-cylinder 2-cycle Diesel engines. B.H.P. 450 = 8 kts.
  • Deadweight capacity: 1000 tons.
  • Own oil fuel: 29 tons.
  • Description: " Ferol," " Servitor," "Attendant," Carol" one mast forward, one funnel aft.

ATTENDANT (Chatham, 1913) ; CAROL (Devonport, 1913). 1935 tons.

  • Dimensions: 200 x 34 x 13 feet.
  • I.H.P. 450 = 8 kts.
  • Coal: 60 tons.

BURMA (Greenock. 1911). 3945 tons

  • H.P. 1200 = 11 kts.
  • Cargo capacity: 2,500 tons oil fuel.
  • Own fuel. = 210 tons.

PETROLEUM (Wallsend, 1901). 9900 tons.

  • Dimensions: 370 ft. x 48 ft. 8 in. x 24 feet.
  • H.P. 2000 = 13 kts.
  • Oil : 426 tons.

KHARKI (1899, bought. 1900). 1430 tons.

  • H.P. 775 = 13 kts.
  • Fuel: 90 tons.

ISLA (1903, purchased 1907). 1010 tons.

  • Dimensions: 170 x 26 x 12 feet.
  • H.P. 650 = 10 kts.
  • Petrol-carrying vessel for submarines.
  • Fuel: 75 tons.

INDUSTRY (1901). 1460 tons.

  • H.P. 750 = 10 kts.
  • Fuel 180 tons.
